Vinnie Platek has always wanted his own restaurant. A former employee of Pittsburgh’s own “Original O” hotdog shop back in the 70’s and 80’s, he often thought about how great it’d be to have his own little piece of the Pittsburgh culinary nostalgia.
In 2020, he got just that.
Welcome to the Kickstand Sandwich Shop.
A motorcycle enthusiast, the name for our little slice of heaven came to Platek while he was cleaning his bike. Polishing a rusty kickstand with a piece of steel wool, he got to thinking that “The Kickstand” might be a good name for a shop someday. The rest is history.
We’re not a big place - tucked modestly in between several other restaurants and shops in Pittsburgh’s Brookline neighborhood. Situated right on Brookline Boulevard, we’re hoping the plumes of white smoke coming off the hot grill and that signature aroma of sausage searing on the flat top might serve as the beacon you need to guide you in for a visit.
Inside, our walls are littered with a combination of original content that Vinnie proudly “came up with himself,” along with little pieces of donated or acquired treasures: Motorcycle parts, signage, sentimental trinkets, favorite movie memorabilia, and more. Got something worthy of sharing? Bring it in, we’ll hang it up.
The furniture’s not fancy, but good conversation is readily available (complete with a heavy dose of Pittsburghese). The rolls, buns, and bread: Always Mancini’s. And our fresh meats and produce: Straight from none other than the Strip.
